There is nothing in the laws of physics that says leaving a pile of parts in a junkyard couldn’t result in the wind alone turning them into a sweet custom machine; it’s just that the odds are infinitesimal. Instead, to make it a sure thing, you only need to park a modern Ducati Panigale next to a classic 1973 Honda CB500 in the Duke Motorcycles workshop. And here in the foothills of the French Riviera, they’ve created this low entropy, high energy, retro tech cafe racer they call ‘Mrs Duke.’

Of course it won’t be ready right away, head chef of delicious customs at Duke, Lionel, has more than 20 years experience in the motorcycle game and likes things done right. With a whopping 700 hours of build time required for him to work his magic on this one machine in his simple garage to finish the final product. At current rates of pay and the quality components used this makes it one hell of an expensive build. But that was never the point, he built it for himself and as he tell us “it is a personal project that I wanted, deliberately different from what we can see, a project that looks like me and that highlights my style and all the methods of work that I use.”

The challenge he set himself was to create a “2018” cafe version of a Honda CB500 Four by mixing old and new, much like many of the manufacturers churning out retro bikes, just that this is of a much higher standard. The modern Ducati components are far from a bolt on affair and meant the CB500 had to be stripped back to a bare frame so it could be prepared properly. To mount the single sided swingarm from the modern Italian required the short block to be in place so frame and chain alignment could be adjusted and reinforcements added in the right places.

Then the subframe was cut off and a new slimline replacement painstakingly fabricated to suit. Further down, the centre posts a tab was cut out of steel and welded just in the right place to act as the new shock mount, with the old twin sticks long gone. Before they were bolted together the frame and swingarm were both painted white and even the Ohlins shock got the wedding dress colour scheme on the spring and remote reservoir. The factory Brembo rear brake remains, with a drilled disc and braided lines adding some serious stopping power.

Headlight doubles as a number board

The new addition requires a radial master cylinder to operate with the disc replacing the rear drum, a pair of rearsets would do the job and they don’t come much nicer than a machined set from Bonamici Racing, anodised in black. At the pointy end it’s all Panigale, with a change of bearings in the headstock and a new steering stem required to make the conversion. The Ohlins fork tubes are finished in white with a satin black making for the perfect contrast on the triple trees. The big Brembo’s get the white colour effect and clamp a set of floating discs for epic stopping power.

The lightweight forged wheels couldn’t be more different to the old chrome spoked items that the Honda once wore and wrapped in Michelin Power slicks they look mean as hell! When it came time for the cafe racer’s body work Lionel was very clear on the direction he was to take, “I wanted to keep the proportions of the tank original and the form of origin so that one recognises the CB500.” But that’s not ’70s steel under there, with the entire piece from front to back hand-made aluminium of monotype construction. It not only saves a considerable amount of weight it all lifts off in one go!

“There are distinctly classic touches like the Monza filler cap, while the frenched in Motogadget speedo couldn’t be more 21st century.”

The tank section very much resembles the Honda item, while the rear is kept short and simple with racy lines. But everywhere you look there are little extra details; from the stamped mesh in chrome, to the stainless cables that run from front to back with very deliberate anchor points integrated into the design. There are distinctly classic touches like the Monza filler cap, while the frenched in Motogadget speedo couldn’t be more 21st century and yet it all works seamlessly together.

The proud Frenchman from the village of Tourrettes-sur-Loup even going so far as to ensure the famed Drapeau Français can be seen in the instrument when the key is turned. To finish the metalwork a hand rolled front fender was made to suit and is suspended by more stainless cable. As for the colour, “pure white…, it’s something that I wanted to do for a long time, a completely white motorcycle” accented with numbers and logos from 18 carat gold leaf. The number 7 is prominent throughout with Lionel etching it into the headlight glass, with LEDs in behind.

The racer’s clutch is now hydraulically operated with an extra reservoir on the housing fed by a braided steel line that runs to the bars. But the pièce de résistance is without doubt the barking mad 4 into 4 stainless steel exhaust, heavily inspired by those from the MotoGP paddock. A total of 115 individual pieces were welded together by Lionel until he had each runner just as he wanted it. Two of the pipes vent out the side by the exposed rear tyre, while the remaining two run under the seat with venting doing its best to ease the heat soak.

Finally, NMB Design was entrusted with creating the saddle for this mighty Honda steed and Alcantara with white stitching continues the quality theme. It’s a rare bike that has a single Ohlins shock on one side and a chrome kick starter on the other. But in creating Mrs Duke, Lionel has shown that not only can he build the bike of his dreams but successfully merge the best of old and new. In the process creating one incredible retro tech racer that will have plenty hoping to get their hands on Duke Motorcycles’ Missus!

Just the four exhaust pipes, then…

Written by Andrew Jones

There’s nothing like a little lane splitting to raise the ire (and jealousy) of our four-wheeled brethren. While the practice in Australia, as in the US, is only legal in some states and frowned upon in others, you’d be hard-pressed to find a rider anywhere in the world that hasn’t tried it. Hell, in some South East Asian countries it’s the national passtime. But for BCR Design’s Benjie Flipprboi, a traffic jammed pick-up truck gave him a little time to daydream about lane splitting. Specifically, he wondered what a bike designed to lane split might look like? Funnily enough, it would probably look a lot like this svelte belter, BCR‘s new ‘Lane Splitter 54’ Yamaha SR400 cafe racer.

A few month‘s back, Benjie and his New Jersey team were asked by a local Yamaha dealer to do some custom work on their Yamaha SR400. “On the way to the meeting where we were going to discuss the logistics of the rebuild, I got stuck in morning rush hour traffic in my pickup truck,” says Flipprboi. “One of the few benefits of being in stand-still traffic is that it is fertile territory for creative thinking. For example, ‘How cool it would be to build a bike that’s narrow enough to go between the cars during rush hour traffic?’ Who would have thought something creative could come out of all that noise, congestion and pollution?” smiles Benjie.

So with that genius gem of an idea, and a revolutionary new use for traffic jams, Benjie sealed the dealer’s deal, rolled up his sleeves, and got to work. “When it was time to build the cafe racer, one of our goals was to make it as narrow as we could. With all the calibrations, we were able to trim down the donor 2016 Yamaha SR400 EFI to a tiny 54 centimeters (21 inches); hence the name, ‘Lane Splitter 54.’“

Near-perfect lines

This width-first approach wasn’t just a pie-in-the-sky idea, either. They planned the whole build around it. “For most builds, we would usually start with the gas tank but with this project we started with the subframe. We wanted the bike to be light and open, and to minimize the use of body panels. The stock tail and seat frame were too wide for what we had in mind and the lines of the frame made the bike look too bulky.”

“After taking the bike apart, we cut off the rear frame and fabricated a new, triangular subassembly. Then we raised the bottom support as high as possible so that the rear wheel would be noticeably exposed, architecting a vision of simplicity and weightlessness. Next, the tail section was formed from stainless steel and bolted to the main frame.”

After completing the subframe, the team moved on to the gas tank. With aluminum as their substrate of choice, a teardrop-shaped design was given the thumbs up. This was done in order to capture the essence of the stock Yamaha SR400 tank, while still giving the bike a bespoke look overall. “When fitting the tank out, we reused the stock petcock, mounted the tachometer in the centre of the tank and then custom-machined a gas cap which we mounted on the upper right side of the tank.”

“The shape of the seat was designed to match the tail of the tank. We added a teardrop-shaped tail light, wrapped the seat with black distressed cowhide leather, and added a cut out on the right side for the integrated exhaust tip.” Killer touch, huh? “The scalloped-shaped front fairing is constructed of aluminum and is mounted directly to the frame.”

In order to dress up the front end of the Yamaha racer, BCR fabricated some beautiful stainless fork shrouds. To match these, they chose a pair of wrap-around, low-style handle bars and added an old-school steering damper to stop the wobbles. “Then we custom fabricated the hand controls and an internal cable throttle. Finally, to capture a little of the art deco look, we made the front brake disc cover out of aluminum, adding air vents to provide the necessary aesthetic detail.”

A plethora of teardrops

“The foot pegs and controls are made of stainless and aluminum,” says Benjie. But it’s his next point that has us on tenterhooks; what about that amazing exhaust and intake? “The bike’s teardrop shape conveys a sense of speed even at standstill, so it was used in the design of the velocity stack and the exhaust tip.”

“The bike’s teardrop shape conveys a sense of speed…so it was used in the design of the velocity stack and the exhaust tip.”

A one-sided argument

“This cafe racer project was an exciting artistic challenge. We were given the opportunity to work with the Yamaha SR400, which in our opinion is the best foundation to use for customization. There were a variety of design paths to pursue, from which we had to choose only one. Our final decision was to use the bike’s teardrop silhouette to inspire the downstream design decisions chosen for the subcomponents.” The irony here was that several other design paths were deemed equally inspiring and also worthy of pursuit. Can you imagine? “Perhaps one day, we will have the opportunity to pursue those other options,” says Benjie. Here’s hoping.

Greg Hageman’s beautiful ‘Vincentification’ of his famous Yamaha Viragos is well documented. Just how he manages to turn a cheesy Harley knock-off into something with such style and grace is clearly moto black magic. But as with most bike builders of his calibre, he’s no sooner developed a mind-blowing new niche than he’s bored with it and looking for ways to mix it up. In this instance, he’s imagined his latest Vincent Virago bobber as a much more ‘in-your-face’ creation that’s about as subtle as a baseball bat to the nose. Wondering what a classic English bike would look like if it was crossbred with a gangster from the Bronx? Forget about it.

“I now live in Bettendorf, Iowa, in a place called the Quad Cities,” Greg begins. “The move has proved to be a lot of work and a little more difficult than I had thought. I’ve learned that living in a smaller area in the Midwest versus living in Tampa means that finding vendors for paint, powder coat, upholstery and fabrication supplies is difficult. So for a lot of these things, I still end up shipping things down to Tampa, having them done and shipped back to me, which adds time and cost.”

Greg’s other challenge with the new Iowa location was one of temperatures, or lack thereof. “Winters here are pretty serious, and it’s hard to test ride a new custom bike in snow and ice. This last winter was quite long; we had snow until the middle of last month.” Note to self: try to convince Greg to move to Sydney.

For a larger gentleman, Vinnie’s quite the looker

“As far as the bike’s style, I’m not sure what category it’d fall into. Maybe bobber meets brat?” Like a few of Hageman’s previous Viragos, this one takes its inspiration from classic Vincent bikes. “My goal once again was to pull some styling from those Vincents and then go from there. The bike is an ’82 Virago, but it has a ’95 XV1100 engine, and a 2003 Yamaha Star front end, so strictly speaking it’s a ’82/’95/’03 Yamaha. I call it ‘Fat Vinnie.’”

Greg had a client contact him last year who had previously purchased a Harley Sportster cafe racer from him. He wanted another bike; something he could comfortably use as a daily rider, something dependable and different. They originally talked about building a K-model BMW, but he had just finished building a Vincent-style bobber that we featured here. “He loved that bike, but he wasn’t too crazy about its skinny look. He wanted something with meat on it; a fuller, fatter ride. Something simple, elegant, reliable and not crazy expensive.”

“He wanted something with meat on it; a fuller, fatter look. Something simple, elegant, reliable”

“We settled on a bike similar to the Vincent and Viragos I had done, but more simple and chunky looking. The owner is 6’4″, so it had to be set up for a taller rider. I chose to use a longer bench seat, keep the stock peg location, and add some higher clip-ons to better fit the rider.”

Greg liked the simplicity of the mono frame, so he used an ’82 XV920 example, then fitted the complete ’03 Yamaha Star front end. He then took an XV700 rear hub, shipped it to Buchanans in California to have a 16×3 rear rim specially made to the correct offset. A quick chrome plate and it was done.

“Then I purchased a low mileage, clean ’95 XV1100 to use for the engine and ignition. We wanted it to be as dependable as possible, and these models have a much better starting system than the ‘80s ones. The engine was cleaned, detailed and checked over thoroughly. I had all the covers powder coated gloss black and all the hardware was replaced with polished stainless. New Mikuni VM34 round slides were then fitted; I use those on pretty much every Virago I build, nowadays. They are reliable and they work very well.”

Speedo is perfectly suited to the look

“For the tank, I took and fitted an aftermarket Vincent replica and had it painted. The electronics consist of a Motogadget M-unit, LED headlight, new turn signals and a Speedhut GPS speedo with integrated tacho. I chose a 4″ dial to reference the big, original Vincent unit.”

The bike is set up so that the new owner could run a set of modern 130/90/16 tires if he choses, but Greg installed a set of Shinko Super Classics for now. He was pretty impressed on how they handled, too. “The bike turns very well. It’s light, nimble, and a pleasure to ride. There’s plenty of torque pulling out of corners and linear power all the way up to the redline. And the ride is cruiser-smooth with the V-Star front end combined with the Hagon rear shock. I’m pretty sure the fat tires contribute to the smooth ride as well.“

“I really do love this Yamaha platform and how these bikes perform and look. I’m actually considering building a run of these bobbers if there is any interest. I think the look is classic while also being unique. I’ve done a lot of cafe racer-style Viragos, but now you can hardly throw a rock without hitting one at a bike show – so this is something a little different. I have been making subframes and parts for people to make their own cafe racer from a Virago, but now I’ve got people trying to capitalize by copying my designs and ideas and selling their own versions for less money. The difference is I am able to keep perfecting and changing things. And unlike them, I’ll always try to stay in front.”

Written by Andrew Jones

Chasing dreams. It’s the subject of many a self-help manual, Hollywood movie and dolphin-covered motivational poster. It’s also the leading answer you’ll get when you ask most motorcycle riders and customisers why they do what they do. ‘It’s always been a dream of mine,’ they’ll say with a smile. Or, ‘I dreamt about doing it as a child.” Having both his moto licence and his own custom shop, Classified Moto’s John Ryland is 2-for-2 in the dreams-made-real stakes. But he still had one castle in the air he wanted to bring down to earth. The ability to do wheelies. It’s not only the subject of the shop’s latest video, it’s also the raison d’être for heir latest custom. Meet ‘Junior’, their Honda CT70 scrambler – the bike that wheelies built.

As the last classified bike we posted was in 2016, we figured there was probably some catching up we needed to do. So, what’s Mr Ryland been up to, then? “Classified is going on its eighth or ninth year in business, and we’re always looking for ways to keep things interesting both from a design point of view and overall job satisfaction standpoint. We’ve definitely had to dig deep in the design department because there are so many bikes out there now that could be confused with Classified bikes. Kinda fun to see, but we know we can’t just keep doing the same thing and stay relevant.”

Just another customised Honda CT70 scrambler wheelie machine…

One thing they’re clearly getting a lot of energy from is their new YouTube series, RESTRICTED. “We’re doing the entire thing in-house, from writing and shooting to scoring. It’s been a blast.” And we’re here to say that watching them ain’t too bad, either. In fact, we’d like to go as far as saying that they’ve kinda moved the whole genre forward a step or three. Gone are the usual clichés of slow-motion sparks and man buns; instead we get honest-to-goodness storylines and creative originality. Hell, when was the last time you saw a custom bike video that opened with a dream sequence set in 1980?

The latest episode (see below) is about this silly cool 1991 Honda Scrambler CT70, and them learning how to do wheelies with it. “We call the bike ‘Junior’, which is short for “Frank Jr.” Frank is the Speed Triple we built last year for Rebel Yell Bourbon. This bike was meant to be a loosely interpreted miniature version of Frank.” John tells us that he was buying a GSX-R front end for one of his builds many years ago and the guy selling it had the little CT in his shed as well. “He made me an offer I couldn’t refuse, and I took it back to the shop.“

“Ever since I was a kid I wanted a minibike,” daydreams John. “It was not on the cards. As a kid, I wasn’t allowed to do anything that could be considered dangerous. Ironic that I ended up owning a motorcycle shop in my middle age, then. But we built Junior to have that ‘Classified look’ after learning to pop wheelies on it. It kept showing up in pics and videos we made, so we wanted him to put his best foot forward.”

“As a kid, I wasn’t allowed to do anything that could be considered dangerous. Ironic that I ended up owning a motorcycle shop”

2 o’clock rock

As far as Classified’s builds go, there’s nothing too complicated about this one. But that doesn’t mean it’s average, either. Hell, could a wheelie-poppin’ Honda CT70 scrambler ever be ‘average’? “It’s a bolt-on front end and brake setup. Some off-the-shelf canister shocks at the rear. The frame is stripped, like we do with a lot of our tanks. But this bike is more a statement about taking time out to be silly and have fun. Because as fun as you might thing the motorcycle business is, it can be very stressful a lot of the time. Junior is like a reminder to not take everything so seriously.”

“The only hard part about the build was when we decided at the last-minute to finish it so we could take it to Sturgis with the Rebel Yell Bourbon crew. The Honda had been functioning, but not strictly ‘Classified’ for a while. Then suddenly we thought, ‘we need to get this thing to Sturgis and ride wheelies through the campground!’ It was a good motivator, but was cutting it very close.”

Some workplaces have quite areas or rostered days off to curtail workplace stress. But Classified have taken a decidedly outside-the-box approach to the issue. “We think of Junior as the shop therapist. When you’re feeling down or stressed or anxious, kick Junior over and hit the road for some scrambler wheelie relief. He will fix you right up.” Sounds like our kind of job; who says America doesn’t have a decent healthcare system?

Junior takes a brief ‘both wheels down’ break

“The Honda’s coolest feature is probably the seat,” John smiles. “We wanted to have the height of a normal CT seat, but without the ‘huge block of vinyl’ look. So, we made standoffs for the hinged seat pan. This allows us to flip the seat up for fuelling as well as access the battery and fuses. But make no mistake; the bike’s true purpose is to do wheelies. I’m quite sure that we have logged more miles on one wheel than two at this point.” Giddy up!
