Lightning Motorcycles may have been quiet from the electric motorcycle scene lately, but that silence ends now, as the company has announced its next model to accompany the LS-218. It’s called the Lightning Strike, and unlike the high-dollar, flagship LS-218, the Strike is an electric motorcycle for the masses, according to Lightning.

Building a motorcycle for the masses means building to a certain price point, and at a starting price of $12,998, the Strike appears to be on the right path for hitting it rich with the masses. It undercuts the $16,495 Zero SR by a fair amount, and comes in significantly less than its $38,888 LS-218 big brother.

Unfortunately, Lightning is extremely stingy with this teaser and we don’t know specifics about the Strike other than Lightning’s claim of 150-mile range, 150 mph, and 35-minute DC fast-charging capabilities.

From the image above, we can see its Ducati 1198-esque headlights, but not much else. We think it’s a fair guess to say the Strike will be fully-faired, probably borrowing styling cues from the LS-218. The official launch of the Strike will come in March 2019, where we expect to get full details on the bike, and hopefully a chance to throw a leg over one for a test ride.

We’re barely into 2019, but already this year is shaping up to be an exciting one for electric motorcycle fans. First, Zero announced a new generation of electric models will be unveiled next month. Then Harley-Davidson announced more details for the 2020 LiveWire, along with two other electric concepts. Now with the Lightning Strike announcement, the future is looking bright for electrics. Of course, we’ll have more details as we get them.

I’ve never been a fan of the mid-’90s – early 2000s Suzuki Katana. To me they were fat, underpowered, and hideously ugly – three traits that should spell instant death to any motorcycle. It’s an utter shame the Katana name – a once well respected and sought after model – was attached to that motorcycle in the end. I made my distaste of that bike well known when I met James for the first time. He laughed it off, even agreed with me on some points, then changed the subject. It was like he knew the Katana he was riding was bad, but didn’t want to dwell on it any more than he had to. Maybe he got it for free?

I was still new to motorcycles at that point, and was lucky enough to stumble upon a forum group that held regular rides where newbs were welcome. James took me under his wing. I didn’t ask for it, nor did I really even seek it, but we somehow formed a bond. You would think trashing someone’s motorcycle would put you on an instant ban list, but for whatever reason after that, we hit it off.

I like most motorcycles. I don’t like the late-model Suzuki Katanas. Thankfully, people like James exist to keep them on the road.

It started out as they usually do, with group canyon rides with our fellow forum buddies. When we weren’t riding, we were talking about riding on the forum. We all became surprisingly tight. As the collective group, including James, started to pick up the pace, we eventually turned to trackdays together. James was never the one to give me pointers on how to cut seconds off my lap time – there were other people in our group better suited for that – but he did freely give me advice on how to stay safe on the road. During and after each trackday, when our group would all laugh and joke about battling each other, James and I would go back and forth about the dicey passes we made, he on his Katana and me on my SV650. Despite the fact he was hustling that poor Katana as far as she would go, I’d still tease him and say how much better off he’d be if he just got a real track bike.

Before long, a grey-market Yamaha FZR400 showed up in his garage. He never told me he was looking to buy one, so this came as a shock. Maybe that was his goal the entire time. I think he even won a couple novice races on it, too. But still, that damn Katana remained parked in the back of his garage.

James, doing his part in leading a group canyon ride with some newer riders.

Eventually I couldn’t take it anymore and I had to ask him why he liked that Katana so much. “I don’t,” he replied. You see, he didn’t choose the Katana. The Katana chose him. I learned that James had a younger brother, roughly my age, who loved to ride. Except his riding career was cut short by a terrible traffic accident that took his life. This was his Katana. As part of his grieving process, James inherited the Katana, fixed everything that was broken, and put it back on the road. Riding it daily would be his way of remembering his brother. Taking me under his wing was his attempt at making sure what happened to his brother didn’t happen again.

Of course, now knowing the history of the Katana made me feel absolutely terrible about myself, but James assured me it was fine. Thick-skinned and witty, able to take it and dish it back out, that’s James. When he wasn’t riding, he was usually somewhere cool, clearly not chained to a 9-to-5 like the rest of us. Our bond grew greater when I discovered he was a writer by trade (thus explaining his witty comebacks). His main gig was writing ad copy, marketing materials, and building websites for commercial clients. All of which he could do virtually anywhere with an internet connection. So, I’d pick his brain about the writing process, how to work from anywhere, and just life in general. He always had a thoughtful answer, with witty humor strewn throughout. “Damn, he’s good.” I would inevitably blurt to myself – each and every time. To this day I try to incorporate his advice and his style when I write. Unfortunately, I know I’m never going to measure up.

The Katana had already been crashed once, so he didn’t care if it tumbled down the road again.

As tends to happen in life, we grew apart. More so on my end. My cushy magazine job writing about motorcycles kept me busy, but whenever I would post something, James was sure to leave me a witty comment. A not-so-subtle reminder that he was watching. Still, he made time to come to my wedding, where we chatted as if we last saw each other yesterday. Soon after, he made a big move – packing all his earthly belongings into a carry-on backpack and booking a one-way ticket to Thailand. Of course, he bought a scooter to get around.

Our communication really became sparse after that, but social media kept us both in touch – me envious of his travels and life experiences, he jealous of the latest bike I was riding (or so I assume). A note on holidays or birthdays reminded the other that they still cared at least enough to post 140 characters or less on their respective walls. Often it was just two words. Somehow it was enough. We knew the other one was watching.

James is proof that if you can ride a Katana quickly, once you hop on a “real” sportbike the results come naturally.

James died yesterday. It hasn’t even been 24 hours from the time I write this that I got the news. Unexpected doesn’t begin to describe the whirlwind going through my head. He was as full of life as anyone I’d ever known, with a memory bank of life experiences many, including myself, will only ever dream of. I don’t know how it happened at this point, but it really doesn’t matter anymore. He’s not the first of my friends to pass, and he surely won’t be the last, but it’s always the unexpected ones that sting the most. James was a big presence during my early riding days, and though we grew apart geographically, I’d like to think we stayed close electronically.

I had another topic I was originally going to write about today. One I had put a tiny bit of thought into. But today is not the day. Instead, you’re getting my stream of thought as I mourn the loss of my friend. Rest in peace, James. I hope I made you proud. Now you and your brother can go annoy everybody upstairs on your ugly Katana!

Ducati refined its Scrambler lineup ahead of MY2019, and the Café Racer was on the receiving end of a number of improvements. Curb appeal was buffed with new graphics, a new seat and old-school laced wheels, but it ain’t all about the vanity. The factory upgraded rideability and safety as well. In other words, Duc took one of its best mid-size rides and made it even better.

Written by Andrew Jones

While we’d argue that the Gulf Oil Fords and Porsches from the ’60s and ’70s are amongst the most beautiful racing machines ever made, it’s with a fair amount of trepidation that we click on bike submissions that have anything to do with the brand. The reason? My God, it’s been done to death. It’s been done to death, buried, dug up at midnight and then done some more. But when California’s Dustin Kott dared to have a go on a Honda CB550, he did it with the subtlety and taste you’d expect from one of America’s best customisers.

Despite some oblique references to Hollywood movie work he may or may not be involved in, Kott kicks things off with a quick description of his upcoming custom build. “It’s a brand new BMW airhead; there’s extensive metal work, including a handmade aluminum fuel tank, a full fairing and a bespoke seat. A custom subframe and unique rearsets will also be incorporated on the build which will be done for the 3rd annual OG Moto Show in Los Angeles.” But enough with the theoretical stuff.

West Coaster Dustin bought this bike from a friend in New York. Ironically, it’s now finished and on its way back to New Jersey. At least it got to see the sights before returning home. “I’m glad to have a number of custom builds on the East Coast now representing the Kott brand,” he says. Getting down to brass tacks, the donor machine is a 1975 CB550. Kott says it represents the culmination of a decade’s worth of skills development and a continuing of his efforts to perfect the CB series.

Obviously inspired by the legendary Gulf paint scheme, any specific references in terms of company branding or racing numbers have been eschewed in favour of a masterfully subtle homage to the legend. “The Gulf blue and orange is complemented by some copper highlights and caramel brown leather. And the proprietary splash guard in front of the rear wheel was given a carbon fibre finish in order to embellish the Gulf scheme and the racing feel as a whole.”

As always, Kott has fully rebuilt the motor and refreshed the carbs along with a raft of other nice touches. “The black anodized Sun Rims are laced with stainless spokes and the Lossa Engineering exhaust system was blacked out to create a stouter aesthetic presence. Additional features include a handmade wiring harness with a down-sized lithium battery, a bespoke seat, new rear sets and custom striping on the tank.”

“I want to continue to perfect and innovate on what I think is a tried and true design.”

With one foot in the here and now and the other stepping to the future, Kott shows that he knows what it takes to make a business great and keep it there. “I want to continue to perfect and innovate on what I think is a tried and true design in order to solidify the Kott brand and to have yet another rolling billboard on the East Coast.”

For Kott, the most challenging part of the build was incorporating the dual rotor on the front end; it was the one area where he was required to deviate from the initial plan. “Using a brand-new concept for the brake line splitter along with machining some of the original brake parts proved to be challenging. But the good thing is that now I have a viable option for running dual front brakes on my CB series Hondas.”

“Besides, the customer had a tremendous amount of creative input on this build which is satisfying on multiple levels. The fruits of your labour, coupled with a design reaching fruition before your very eyes is an incredible thing.”

Since its inception in Milan in the early 70s, SWM made a name for itself building a range of innovative, small capacity machines for Trials, Enduro and Motocross. Founded by Piero Sironi and Fausto Vergani in Milan, in reaction to the off-road successes of Japanese manufacturers in the early ‘70s – SVVM (or Sironi Vergani Vimercate Milano) enjoyed some serious success on the world circuit for twenty years, taking titles across a wide breadth of off-road competition.

But it didn’t last. Sadly, SWM went in liquidation in 1984 and production ceased. And that was it for 30 years, until Ampelio Macchi (formerly an engineer with Cagiva, Aprilia and Husqvarna) got his hands on the SWM brand and joined forces with Chinese businessman Daxing Gong – and together they kicked off its resurgence, unveiling six new models at EICMA 2014. Interestingly, despite the Chinese connection, SWM has chosen to keep manufacturing in Italy – and maintain its historic roots to the region, basing the brand at a former Husqvarna manufacturing plant in Lombardia. But that’s enough about SWM’s illustrious if not brief history; let’s get into its latest model, the Six Days.

It looks the business, doesn’t it? With styling which harks back to the Enduro machines of yesteryear. In fact, there’s almost a Yamaha XT500 feel to it, with its low, bench-style seat, knobby tyres on wire wheels, twin-shock suspension, gaitered forks, upswept twin exhausts, raised bars and punchy single cylinder powerplant (although it could be because of the similar colour schemes too). Much like the original XT, the SWM Six Days is a fairly basic machine. And that’s by no means a criticism. By basic, I mean it’s simple, straightforward and allows you to enjoy the unbridled pleasure of two wheels and an engine, without the faff of invasive electronics and complicated rider modes.

The Six Days is powered by SWM’s 445.3cc air and oil-cooled, four-stroke, SOHC, four-valve, fuel-injected, single-cylinder engine. It’s a punchy little engine, kicking out 30bhp and 35.8Nm of torque at 5,300rpm – with a top speed of around 80mph. Power delivery can be a little snatchy low down in the rev-range, and the engine is much more responsive if you work it harder. There’s plenty of mid-range torque though, allowing you to accelerate out of corners and overtake with confidence. Basically, once you get used to where the power’s available, the little SWM is a joy to ride. It sounds fantastic too, with a distinctive single-cylinder growl emanating from its twin, upswept exhausts. Its five-speed gearbox and clutch are light and precise too – although finding neutral can sometimes be a bit of a challenge.

It’s very comfortable, with its upright, relaxed riding position, low seat and wide bars – and because of the bench-style seat, you can slide forward and back to find a comfortable riding position. In fact, I found myself sliding forward to attack the corners. Corners it handles surprisingly well. Despite its 19-inch front wheel and knobbly Pirelli MT-60 tyres, there’s no vagueness from the front end, and it turns lightly into corners and holds its line well at deep lean angles.

The suspension is capable, but as you’d expect, it is not the most sophisticated of set-ups – although it does offer preload adjustment at the rear. In general, it’s fairly soft, which helps offer a comfortable ride. However, mid-corner bumps are likely to unsettle the bike – but because of its wide bars and light weight, it’s not too much of challenge to muscle it into place. Brakes are fairly basic too. Its front single 260mm disc (with ABS) is ample for stopping the lightweight bike, offering decent bite and reasonable progression, while the rear 220mm disc is perfect for smooth filtering and tight turns in town.

Off-road, the little SWM is great fun. Of course, you can’t expect modern motocross levels of performance – mostly as a result of its short suspension travel. So no big jumps – but it’s quite happy tackling some niggly green lanes and single tracks. It’ll probably surprise you with just how capable it is on the dirt – I know it did me.

Controls are fairly basic, but everything works as you’d expect. It’s tall, circular mirrors are wide and well placed for rear vision, the switchgears are where you’d expect them and its simple dual-pod analogue instrument panel offers a speedometer and tachometer with a small LCD screen showing odometer and one trip meter. There are no fancy extras like a fuel gauge, just a fuel warning light.

If you are after a retro-inspired scrambler, you could do a lot worse than checking out SWM’s Six Days. It’s a stylish little bike that turns heads everywhere you go, and you can ride it on an A2 licence too. In short, it’s a very capable machine, as happy tearing up the trails as it is commuting through traffic – and costing £5499 on the road, it’s significantly cheaper than most of the competition too.

Portugal has long been a hotbed of custom creativity in Europe and one of the main protagonists since the early days has been Rua Machines. We’re big fans of their work and it was a delight to host Armando and Victor at last year’s Bike Shed London show with the fabulous Guzzi Nevada #8. And here’s the latest from their workshops, based just south of Porto.

This 2018 BMW R nineT Scrambler left the showroom as an already decent looking motorcycle but the buyer used to own a bike clothing and lifestyle store in Lisbon, and wanted the Beemer to cut a more custom look while maintaining the ability to be returned to standard trim.

The tail was tidied using a fabricated steel and powder-coated bracket rather than the ugly plastic original and the indicators have been swapped for slightly smaller ones. The highly polished stainless exhaust is one of Rua’s own components, giving the last of the air-cooled boxer twin the rumble it deserves.

But the most impactful aesthetic changes are obviously the fuel tank and saddle. A narrow 70s style look was the brief and the guys from Rua have nailed that. Gone is the awkward stocker along with the air intake tract synonymous with this generation of R nineT. The asymmetric vessel was made in the Rua workshops and features a beautifully integrated intake for the stock airbox located just above the transmission. Complemented by a muted tone and tasteful stripes the new tank transforms the bike and sets it apart from the surfeit of tarted-up nineTs we’ve seen lately.

The oxblood leather saddle adds to the retro vibe with pairs of eyelet vents reminiscent of a Ford GT40 seat. From here it looks like a perfectly executed upholstery job – lovely!

Sure, this isn’t the most customised BMW Scrambler out there but the guys from Rua have done a great job and we thought it well worth a share.

If attention to detail and decent craftsmanship appeals to you and you’re looking for a custom shop to bring your vision to life, check out Rua Machines     Bike Shed Archive    |   Instagram  |   Facebook    |    Website
